Wayne State University (WSU) is committed to ensuring an inclusive and accessible environment for pregnant and parenting students.
Consistent with University policy and applicable law, the University will not exclude a student from participating in any part of an educational program based on the student’s pregnancy or pregnancy-related condition.
Pregnancy or related conditions include:
- Pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, and lactation;
- Medical conditions related to pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, and lactation; and
- Recovery from pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, lactation, or related medical conditions.
Students who are pregnant or who are experiencing related conditions are encouraged to contact the Title IX Coordinator to learn about their rights and resources available to support their academic success.
Rights of pregnant students under Title IX
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX) prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities including academic, educational, extracurricular, employment, athletic and other school programs or activities. This prohibition includes discrimination based on a student’s current, potential, or past pregnancy or related conditions.
Reasonable modifications
Students who disclose a pregnancy or related condition to WSU are eligible for reasonable modifications to ensure equal access to the University’s education programs and activities.
Identifying a reasonable modification is an interactive and collaborative effort between the student and the University. In addition, the range of available reasonable modifications will vary with respect to the specific circumstances and the student’s individualized needs resulting from pregnancy or related conditions.
How to request a reasonable modification
Students may connect with the Title IX Coordinator to determine any available reasonable modifications that will address the student’s individualized needs and ensure equal access.
University employee information sharing requirements
When a student informs a university employee of the student's pregnancy or related condition, the employee must:
- Provide the student, verbally or in writing, the Title IX Coordinator contact information, and
- Inform the student that the Title IX Coordinator can help coordinate specific actions to prevent sex discrimination and ensure the student's equal access to the university’s education program or activity.
